With her fortieth birthday approaching, Lucy Carpenter thinks she finally has it all: a wonderful new husband, Jonah, a successful career and the chance of a precious baby of her own. Life couldn’t be more perfect.

But becoming parents proves much harder to achieve than Lucy and Jonah imagined, and when Jonah’s teenage daughter Camille comes to stay with them, she becomes a constant reminder of what Lucy doesn’t have. Jonah’s love and support are unquestioning, but Lucy’s struggles with work and her own failing dreams begin to take their toll. With Camille’s presence straining the bonds of Lucy’s marriage even further, Lucy suddenly feels herself close to losing everything…

This heart-wrenchingly poignant family drama from bestselling author Amanda Prowse asks the question: in today’s hectic world, what does it mean to be a mother?

This was such an emotive storyline of one woman’s all consuming longing to have a child.

Lucy is approaching a time in her life when all around her friends and peers are starting a family.  She feels let down that she wasn’t invited to this exclusive party.  When she meets Jonah at a christening of all places love blossoms very quickly.  Now happily married a year Lucy and Jonah want to be part of this ‘new family’ party.  However, Jonah already has a child of his own from his first marriage, 16 year old Camille who lives with her mother in France.  Lucy is a little envious of Jonah who has already felt the emotions of becoming a parent but she is desperate to have her own little family with Jonah.

Lucy and Jonah are both ecstatic when Lucy finds out she is pregnant and Lucy soon starts nesting knitting little outfits for the newborn.  Sadly it wasn’t to be and Lucy in particular is left in despair.  The elation of finding out you were pregnant for then to be cruelly snatched away from you is such a traumatic blow for anyone.  Lucy’s emotions are understandably up and down with the highs and lows of the challenges she is facing.

A new challenge comes their way when Camille comes to live with them for a few months.  Jonah is delighted but as Lucy has never met her step-daughter fear creeps in and envy of the relationship that has already been built with Jonah and his daughter.

I can’t begin to imagine how this longing to become a mother must feel like and for it to be cruelly stopped at every turn you make.  However, Amanda Prowse poured so much into this storyline, the words emanating from the pages took you on this very emotive journey the heartbreak was very evident.  There is a twist that Amanda takes you on and I didn’t see it coming as I was so wrapped up in the now with Lucy.  My heart was in turmoil.  Lucy’s grief will always be there but in life we have to learn to focus our grief onto something positive and channel our love in other directions.  A truly moving story 5/5*
