Meg Mathers, the headstrong youngest sibling of a reiving family on the English-Scottish border, is determined to remain at her childhood home, caring for the land and village she’s grown up with. When an accident brings her a broken ankle and six weeks in the resentful company of ambitious and angry young reiver Will Hetherington, attraction starts to build. Both begin to realise they might have met their match, and the love of their lives, but 15th century border living is not that simple, as Meg soon finds herself betrothed to the weakling son of a tyrannical neighbour, Alexander Gray. When tragedy strikes, can Meg and Will find their way back to each other, and can Will finally take his own personal revenge on Gray?
I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book. All opinions are my own and no content may be copied. However, authors and publishers may use elements of my reviews for quotes.
I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of a new series by historical fiction author Jennifer C Wilson. The Raided Heart (A Border Reiver Romantic Adventure) is Book One in the Historic Hearts series.
The Raided Heart is set in the 15th century in the rural parts of northern England close to the Scottish border. It’s the story of a young woman, Meg, who is highly respected by the villagers and her family but when she is betrothed to someone from an opposing reiver clan her life is no longer her own and what her heart desires can no longer be won. This is so unfair to Meg but she feels she has no other option to comply to keep the peace and protect her family and village.
Will is a young reiver who following a tragedy in his past has been accepted into the village and Meg’s family. He’s become a reliable border reiver. Border reivers were a band of men that protected their land and villagers from cattle rustling, arson and physical attacks amongst the villagers. They were a band of men that ruled the land whether through legal means or not and many villagers paid for protection from rival clans.
Will had encountered the ruthless and merciless hands of a vicious leader of a rival reiver clan years ago and has never forgotten the devastation he acrued and has vowed a vengeance with this man. However, when this man becomes a possible threat to his blossoming friendship with Meg, Will finds it difficult to contain his emotions.
A historical romance that’s filled with drama, danger and dalliances of the heart.
I’m looking forward to more from Jennifer C Wilson and the Historical Hearts series.
