The Bus Ride: A Zany Busnapping Adventure
When Devon discovers his car stolen, he must find transportation to get to his destination before the deadline to get what’s rightfully his: the urn containing one-fifth of his deceased momma. He hops on Bus No. 255 and changes the course of the route. As the passengers’ personalities and needs emerge, they go from being strangers to a bonded family within hours as they fight for each other, and themselves… in more ways than one. Funny and sentimental, this story will grab your heart as you cheer everyone on Bus Route No. 255, maybe even the busnapper.
Meet the passengers on Bus No. 255, an unlikely group of people who have no choice but to try to get along and survive when their bus gets busnapped. Meet Devon, who has a deadline he must meet, or risk losing what’s his; Doug, a dreamer of a better life, but first must face a sad truth; Frankie, a life full of loneliness, but unexpectedly becomes a hero; Gloria, a woman who finds validation in the most unexpected place; Autumn, a girl who desires a family, and a sense of belonging; Dave, a man seeking justice and equality, learns to love himself as he is; and the Garcia family, whose family ties brings them to the brink of danger. Follow these passengers as they each fulfill their destinies, together.
I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of Joanie Chevalier’s latest novel: The Bus Ride: A Zany Busnapping Adventure. I have the pleasure of sharing an extract with you.
Devon aka FakeBusDriver had just busnapped the bus and had given everyone nicknames because he thought calling everyone ‘hey you’ to be rude. This is what happened next.
FakeBusDriver glared at them in the mirror and didn’t see the hares crossing the road. When he turned his eyes back to the road, he yanked the wheel to miss them. It was a tad too much yank. The bus went airborne, and plowed over a dirt mound, hitting a two-foot-tall cactus. The bus came to a sudden halt.
As the dust settled, the silence was deafening. Then something blew under the hood and steam began whistling out from the front grill.
“This is not good,” mumbled SpyMan, breaking the silence.
RealBusDriver awoke from his nap when he fell out of his seat. He pulled himself up and yelled, “Am I late? Did I miss the overtime?” He shook his head and looked around, realizing they had just crashed.
“Oh, okay,” he said as he straightened his wrinkled blue uniform shirt. “Don’t panic!”
“What the hell just happened?” asked ToughGirl.
“Nothing bad, honey, we’re okay,” said MuffinTopMomma as she reached down to pick up the small items that had rolled out of her bag. “Right, honey?” she asked, turning her attention to FakeBusDriver.
“Quick, somebody! FakeBusDriver’s hurt!” she shouted when she saw FakeBusDriver slumped over the wheel.
RealBusDriver rushed forward and placed his hand on FakeBusDriver’s back and shook him. “FakeBusDriver! Talk to me!”
The passengers surged forward. “Give him some air,” said MuffinTopMomma.
SpyMan reached over and slid the driver’s side window open. “Turn his head.”
RealBusDriver turned his head, and they all gasped. His eyes were open and staring.
“He’s dead!” cried LonelyBoy.
“I’ve never seen a dead body before!” said ToughGirl, her cheeks blushing with excitement.
“Now, don’t jump to conclusions…” MuffinTopMomma said.
In the next second everyone either screamed, gasped, or jumped when FakeBusDriver’s eyes blinked.
“He turned into a ghost,” gasped ToughGirl, her fingers clenched onto LonelyBoy’s arm.
“I’m not dead, gosh darn it!” FakeBusDriver raised his head and coughed. He sat up and placed both palms on his chest. “My heart’s still beating.”
