Book Blurb

Milly’s Marvellous Mistakes is a funny, rhyming picture book for the X-factor generation of children brought up to expect overnight success and instant gratification!
Our hero, Milly May, more than anything, wants to paint beautiful pictures. But she always ends up with blots and smudges. She really WISHES she was a better artist, and then – hey presto! – her fairy godmother appears (looking a little bit like the artist Frida Khalo!) and grants her wish.
Milly is soon turning out paintings in the style of famous artists, including: Van Gogh and Da Vinci! There are lots of great visual jokes in this beautifully illustrated and colourful book.
But Milly soon discovers that success that comes too easily may not be worth having – especially if it means losing friends.
This funny, rhyming picture book – about art, friendship and the dangers of instant gratification – says it’s ok to make mistakes. Like Peta Rainford’s previous book, The Niggle, it tackles the issue of resilience in a humorous, imaginative and child-friendly way.
This book would be great for early readers or as a bedtime story for children of around 4 to 8 years of age.

Review

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book. All opinions are my own and no content may be copied. However, authors and publishers may use elements of my reviews for quotes

Firstly, I’d like to say how wonderful the illustrations of this picture book are; they are bright and colourful but also there is an organic simplistic quality to them that I’m sure would appeal to youngsters.

The rhyming text is perfect for little ones and I can easily imagine children whether as an individual or in a group situation would soon remember the words and repeat them with glee.

The ethos of the storyline is just right and I’ve witnessed Milly’s initial behaviour in my own children when they were young.  We all get frustrated at times when we can’t do something, even as adults we need gentle reminders that life cannot be rushed and we have to keep trying and practising to achieve our goals.

I really enjoyed Milly’s Marvellous Mistakes and I could see it becoming a popular story for repeat reading with little ones.

Review

This is a delightful, educational picture book that would appeal to all. The story has a lovely rhyming prose that children would enjoy and soon start repeating. I loved the ethos of the whole story with Kian the little cockatoo who lived in a zoo wanting to go back home to his parents in Timbuktu, so he escapes. During his journey home he visits many countries far and wide discovering animals and new places.

The illustrations are cheerful, bright and each page has so much to see and learn about. I will definitely be flicking through the book again and again to see what else I can find in the pictures.

There’s a fabulous fact sheet at the back of the book all about cockatoos and Timbuktu which was a lovely added bonus.

A delightful picture book that would entertain children and open up discussions with littles ones imaginative and open minds.

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the latest book from Mawson: She Ran Away From Love.

This is a delightful little picture book with an important message for young minds.  When all around us we are bombarded by images of what ‘being happy’ is, your happy is not what has millions of likes.  Mawson the big cuddly bear encourages his little friend Frilly to find her own happy; she is scared but knows she has to be brave to take the first steps in her quest.

The author has created a very child friendly approach for young children to learn about themselves.  The images are cute and the whole ethos of the storyline is charming, intuitive and inspiring.

REVIEW

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book. All opinions are my own and no content may be copied. However, authors and publishers may use elements of my reviews for quotes.

Even though my children are all grown up I still appreciate the importance of surrounding children of all ages with books.  When my children were small I loved picture books and I still do now.  Picture books are like two books in one as a child can make up their own story by looking at the pictures and as they get older they can read the book themselves.

William AE Ford has written a wonderful, imaginative, entertaining story and it’s beautifully presented in a picture book format.  If you do buy the ebook format please do read it on a tablet or ereader that is colour compatible so you can fully appreciate the wonderful images in the background of the book.

I think this story would appeal to both boys and girls as Timothy is a character you could easily relate to and there’s probably a child like Timothy in every classroom.  Timothy is a little bored and decides to make himself a time machine.  With his expert time machine making skills he’s now ready for adventures and we follow Timothy for a week travelling through time and making new friends.

The text is written in a rhyming format that flows very well and you can imagine a child soon picking up the words and speaking them out aloud.  The author has written a story that is fun and entertaining but it also opens up the readers mind to a whole new world of imaginations.  If this book was read in a class the teacher could open up a great discussion with the children asking them where they’d like to go on their time travels.

I love buying books as gifts and Timothy Mean and the Time Machine would make a wonderful Christmas present.
