When your relationship is on life support, the Breakup Doctor is on call.

There’s no shortage of broken hearts in Breakup Doctor Brook Ogden’s successful breakup counseling practice—if love is a battlefield, then Brook is the cavalry. Luckily her own love life is in full recovery: after a long, tortuous road, she and Ben Garrett are finally headed down the aisle.

But when a local TV personality—and former frenemy—invites Brook onto her show, she’s blindsided live on the air when the interview turns into an act of long-delayed revenge meant to publicly humiliate her. Brook’s an expert at getting back on your feet when life knocks you down, but as the blows keep piling on—with a betrayal she never saw coming and a family crisis that threatens to pull the foundation out from under her—her confidence starts slinking away. With her clients dropping her faster than a one-night stand, suddenly the Breakup Doctor’s career is in critical care.

Brimming with both the sublime and ridiculous aspects of love—romantic and otherwise—Out of Practice is a funny and heartwarming tale about loss, grief, and failure that will resonate with all who have loved, lost…and dared to love again.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book and would like to thank the author for this.

Out of Practice is Book 4 in The Breakup Doctor series.  The book can be read as a standalone but to appreciate the characters and history I would recommend reading all the books in order.  The Breakup Doctor series is as follows:

I really enjoyed sitting down and revisiting Brook again.  Brook is a relationships counsellor and her practice as The Breakup Doctor with her newspaper column and radio show are doing well until a TV interview with her old high school nemesis goes disastrously wrong and Brook’s professional judgement is left in doubt.  Brook starts to believe the words that have been said about her and starts to get confused as to why she went into this profession in the first place.  On top of all this Brook is grieving for her father who died 6 months ago.  She has been denying her feelings and when her professional career takes another battering she takes stock of her personal and professional life.  Brook’s mother is also causing her concern and changes need to be made in all their lives for them to move on.

Ben, Brook’s fiancé, has been so supportive of Brook but when Brook makes some pretty drastic decisions without him Ben and Brook’s relationship hits a rocky patch.

Can Brook take stock of her heart and soul to bring harmony and balance back to her personal and professional life?

Once again Phoebe Fox entertained me thoroughly throughout this story.  Phoebe cleverly dealt with grief, loss and betrayal by interspersing the storyline with some wonderful tender, endearing moments.  A wonderful end to a great series, although I’m hoping some of the characters will reappear in future stories.  5/5*

Breakup Doctor Brook Ogden has spent the last year sifting through the fallout from the disastrous decision that led to her unconscious uncoupling with boyfriend Ben Garrett. Despite advising her clients you can’t be friends with an ex, she and Ben have somehow begun to stitch together a friendship—one Brook hopes is slowly turning into more. That is, until Ben introduces his new girlfriend, Perfect Pamela, a paragon of womanly virtues who is everything Brook is not.

While Brook navigates her newly volatile emotional life, an unwelcome surprise shows up on her doorstep: the ex-fiancé who broke her heart two years ago—one month before their wedding. Between her ex’s desire to rekindle their attachment, her best friend Sasha’s unexpected crisis, and her own unsquelchable feelings for Ben, Brook finds herself questioning the personal progress she’s made in the last two years—and threatened with the highest-stakes Breakup Doctor failures she’s ever faced.

This is the 3rd book in The Break Up Doctor series.  I haven’t had the pleasure of reading books 1 and 2 but this did not deter me from enjoying book 3 and could easily be enjoyed as a stand alone novel.  However, to appreciate the full journey of the characters I would thoroughly recommend reading books 1, 2 and 3.

In honour of the publication of book 3, Heart Conditions, the publishers have decided to offer book 1 of the series at a discount price of 99p.  To purchase book 1 please follow the link here

I’d like to thank the author, Phoebe Fox, for an arc in return for an honest review.

Brook Ogden is a relationships counsellor and her practice as The Breakup Doctor with her newspaper column and radio show are doing well.  However, Brook’s own personal life is left a little tattered.  After her sudden break-up from her fiancée 2 years ago which left her heart broken Brook spiralled into two further failed relationships.  The last relationship was with Ben.  Brook still has feelings for Ben and is torn by how the relationship ended.  Brook has recently started to see Ben again, just as friends, as she helps out with dog sitting duties.  However, Ben has moved on and is in a relationship with ‘Perfect Pamela’.  Can the shared love of Ben’s dog, Jake, bring them back together?

However, nothing runs smoothly for Brook when an unexpected visitor turns up at her house – Michael, her ex fiancée who dumped her  the month before their wedding.  Brook was left with unanswered questions from Michael following the break-up and is angry and confused whilst still holding fond memories of what they once had.

This is the first book I’ve read by Phoebe Fox and I really enjoyed it.  The text flowed well and I was swiftly reading through the chapters wanting to find out happens next.  Phoebe has created such great characters and I loved Brook and Ben’s friendship.  I’d also like to add how refreshing the covers of Phoebe’s Break-up Doctor books are, love the contemporary illustration with the heart rhythm along the bottom.  This was a fun filled, heart warming, romantic novel with a ‘will they, won’t they’ storyline?  4/5*
