Kate is getting married in a month. Richard, her fiancé, is a lawyer: rich, successful, and very good-looking. She’s definitely in love with him. No doubt about that.

So when Sam, a good friend and her high school crush, returns after eight years of traveling, she doesn’t care. After all, he never actually asked her out, and then he went traveling without her, contrary to their plans. She only agrees to go to dinner with him in order to hear all his news, so why doesn’t she tell him she’s getting married? And is he still bothered by the tragedy eight years ago?

Sometimes life just gets too complicated, and Kate finds she keeps having Very Bad Ideas, which lead to even more complications. Just three days before her wedding, she finds herself in a situation that demands the biggest decision of her life.

Dartmoor

Breaking all the Rules is the new standalone romcom from Rachael Richey.  I adored Rachael’s previous books and was a little worried with this new novel and that I’d be missing my favourite characters Gideon and Abi from Rachael’s The NightHawk series.  However, I needed no fear as I soon fell in love with the characters from this story, especially Sam and was captivated by the storyline.

The story is set in Devon and Kate is 3 weeks away from her wedding to lawyer Richard.  Kate and Richard have been dating 3 years and Kate was so happy when Richard proposed.  However, when Kate bumps into Sam Somerville her life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.  Sam was a good friend of Kate’s at school, secretly she had a massive crush on him.  However, tragedy struck and Sam escaped the country and went travelling.  It was led to believe that the reason Sam fled was due to his broken heart however, eight years on and he is back in the village wanting to catch up with Kate.  Tragic events in the past are brought to the surface which go some way to explain certain directions that were made one fateful night.

Kate is gobsmacked to see Sam and her heart soon starts fluttering and she is left with feelings of nostalgia.  Kate agrees to go for a catch up with him, as friends.  After this catch up Kate is left pondering whether she actually still loves her fiancé Richard.

We follow Kate on her contemplative three week journey leading up to her wedding.  Will her confused mind be clearer on the wedding day?

I loved this romcom.  It was full of fun with some wonderful wit and humour in the storyline.  There was a poignant side to the story full of miscommunicated feelings and it left you with thoughts of “what if.”  Funny, heartwarming and very readable.  A perfect read for fans of Lindsey Kelk, Carmen Reid, Helen Fielding and Sophie Kinsella.

I am so thrilled to be involved in the blogtour promoting and celebrating the release of book 4 in The NightHawk series.  To fully engage and appreciate the series I highly recommend reading the books in chronological order as follows:

  1. Storm Rising
  2. Rhythm of Deceit
  3. Cobwebs in the Dark
  4. The Girl in the Painting

You can find my reviews here for all previous books 1, 2, and 3.

Since starting this book series I have been gripped by Abi and Gideon’s story.  It’s difficult to say which book I have enjoyed the most as I have loved them all but I must say this fourth book totally captivated me.

I do feel that The Girl in the Painting isn’t quite as gripping as the other three novels as the drama wasn’t intense but what this story has is a wonderful love story dating back to the late 1930’s.  I was captivated by the heady first love, the era, the beautiful setting in Paris … it was all just perfect for me.  I couldn’t take my eyes away from the pages.  I loved being transported back in time and overseas to Paris within the pages.  This was a tale of two stories: the here and now discovering a secret past that will change the outlook for all.  The love that was expressed so long ago was an illicit love; a love that was so wrong but was so right … the strength of this love carried through keeping the hearts together for many, many years.  This was a beautiful story that was equally heart wrenching and uplifting at the same time.  5/5*

With NightHawk newly reformed and preparing for a world tour, Abi Hawk finds herself unaccountably insecure about the attention her husband Gideon, the band’s frontman, will receive from groupies. In New Zealand for the first leg of the tour and a visit with Gideon’s sister, they are faced with a new problem. An outrageous claim pushes Abi’s insecurities to new heights, and it takes all their resolve to stick together and sort it out.

Meanwhile their daughter Natasha goes on an adventure of her own, one that places her in danger from an old adversary, forcing Abi and Gideon to summon all their combined strengths to rescue her.

This is the third instalment in The NightHawk series and I was gripped yet again with the drama and romance in Abi and Gideon’s life.

We left Abi and Gideon at the end of book two (Rhythm of Deceit), see my review here just about coping after a traumatic event involving Abi and their daughter Natasha with the band’s ex-drummer Simon.  Simon had become very deranged and had set out to hurt Gideon through Abi and Natasha.  However, Simon was never to be found after this event and was presumed drowned.

It’s a year since this terrible ordeal and Gideon is preparing for the first tour of the newly reformed band.  The first leg of the tour is in New Zealand and Gideon and his family travel overseas to stay with his sister prior to the tour.  Abi is a little worried about how she will react with all the adoring attention from young girls Gideon will attract.  She wasn’t around when Gideon first toured with the band but still felt an unease and pang of jealousy when she saw pictures of him in the press back then.  However, the fans are the least of Abi’s worries when an outrageous claim by an ex-girlfriends shatters all Abi’s doubts about Gideon’s past.

Also, the gripping ordeal with Simon, the ex-drummer, in book two rears it’s ugly head when Simon comes out of hiding and hatches out a plan which has dangerous consequences ahead for Natasha.

Another exciting, gripping instalment.  I loved how this story was set in New Zealand.  I felt the fear, described by Tasha, of being in a strange country, it added an extra depth to the drama as both victim and assailant were unsure of their surroundings.  As always there was love and romance interwoven in the storyline and we get to hear more of Abi, Gideon and Natasha’s personal history.

The ‘sneaky peak/sample’ of the fourth instalment of the series at the end of the book has left me desperate to read more of this captivating series.  A series that is beautiful, emotive, heart breaking, intriguing and with a gripping story that spans decades.  5/5*

I’d like to thank the author, Rachael Richey, for an arc in return for an honest review.

After reading book 1 of the series, Storm Rising, see my review here I was eagerly awaiting to dive into the pages of book 2, Rhythm of Deceit.

It’s been two years since Abi and Gideon have been reunited after ten years apart.  They are now happily married living in Cornwall with their children.  Natasha, their daughter, is still confused as to why she was sent away to live in a children’s home by her grandparents.  Without her parents permission Natasha sets out to discover more about her past.  Abi and Natasha are given a suitcase which once belonged to Abi’s mother.  Without revealing too much of the storyline what follows next is a journey Abi and Natasha take discovering the contents of the suitcase and the details of Abi’s mothers past.

The story also picks up were it left in book 1 regarding Simon Dean, the ex-drummer of the band who has a hateful campaign against Abi.  Simon tried his best to keep the young lovers apart and succeeded for 10 years but now the couple are reunited Simon is constantly reminded of their happiness and is hostility towards Abi is growing.  Simon becomes very unhinged and his revenge take a dramatic turn.

Another great instalment in the NightHawk series.  I was completely hooked with book 2 especially with the revealing history of Abi’s mother. It was very enlightening, sad and traumatic and also demonstrated how life and relationships were different back in the 1950s.  Simon’s storyline was quite dramatic and I was gripped with the intensity of the twists and turns.  I am also left with anticipation how the story will develop in book 3, Cobwebs in the Dark (fab title), which is due for publication in February 2016.  An intense, emotional 5/5* read.

I’d like to thank the author, Rachael Richey, for an arc in return for an honest review.

This is the first book I’ve read by Rachael and I love discovering new authors and new publishers.  Its really good to open your eyes and your mind to new talent.

This was such an addictive read.  A YA inspired story, the first in The NightHawk series, it was full of angst, hurt, deceit, betrayal, emotion, love and heartbreak.  It had so many twists and turns and I can’t wait to dive into the next instalment.

We open the story with 26 year old Abi attending her mother’s funeral.  Abi hasn’t seen her parents for over 8 years and is very resentful of them, particularly how she was treated by them during a traumatic event in her past.  However, Abi’s father needs her at this low time and asks for her help to sort out her mother’s belongings.  Abi makes a startling discovery in the loft which opens her eyes to the full deceit her mother in particular had shown to her daughter.  This discovering brings back many memories from Abi’s past some wonderful and some very painful.

We flit back in time to Abi as a 15 year old, excited with her friends getting ready to go to a party at her school were a band, NightHawk, comprising of three local lads, are performing.  When Abi’s eyes meet with Gideon the singer and bass player an instant connection is made.  However, Abi realises going on a date with a 19 year old could prove tricky with her over protective mother.  With the help of Abi’s friend Abi and Gideon manage to begin dating and their friendship soon turns into a beautiful young love.  NightHawk are soon discovered by publishers and a recording deal followed by a tour in the States brings a separation to the young couple.  Both Abi and Gideon agree to keep in touch and they do write to each other.  However, these letters never met their intended recipients.

It’s been 10 years since Abi and Gideon parted, Abi felt like she’d been abandoned at a time she needed Gideon the most and Gideon just presumed Abi didn’t care anymore.

Gideon’s band, NightHawk, had done extremely well since the 10 years he’d left England.  Yet fame and endless tours were getting too much for Gideon and just recently his days and nights had been disturbed with dreams of Abi.  Gideon decides on a whim to quite the band and flee the country.

What follows is an emotional journey of Abi and Gideon discovering the full extent to what happened in their past and how certain people’s actions were keeping the young lovers apart.  A wonderful, emotive start to The NightHawk series, 4.5/5* read.  I’m excited to find out what happens next for Abi and Gideon in the next episode in the series … Rhythm of Deceit.
