From grieving widow…

1851. After her merchant husband saved her from a life of prostitution, Louisa Hill was briefly happy as a housewife in Bristol. But then a constable arrives at her door. Her husband has been found hanged in a Bath hotel room, a note and a key to a property in Bath the only things she has left of him. And now the debt collectors will come calling.

To a new life as a madam.

Forced to leave everything she knows behind, Louisa finds more painful betrayals waiting for her in the house in Bath. Left with no means of income, Louisa knows she has nothing to turn to but her old way of life. But this time, she’ll do it on her own terms – by turning her home into a brothel for upper class gentleman. And she’s determined to spare the girls she saves from the street the horrors she endured in the past.

Enlisting the help of Jacob Jackson, a quiet but feared boxer, to watch over the house, Louisa is about to embark on a life she never envisaged. Can she find the courage to forge this new path?

A Widow’s Vow is the first in a gripping and gritty new Victorian saga series from Rachel Brimble. You won’t be able to put it down.

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of Rachel Brimble’s latest historical novel: A Widow’s Vow.

A Widow’s Vow is a departure to the popular Pennington’s book series by Rachel Brimble. We are still in the majestic city of Bath but we’ve gone back in time by just over 50 years, the year is 1851, the Victorian era and this is the start of a new historical saga series for the author.

Louise Hill has a past that she is not ashamed of but she is so pleased that she was rescued from this part of her life by her husband and has been happily enjoying married life in Bristol. However, when her husband is discovered dead in a hotel in another city she fears for the safety he created for her. More bad news was to follow but a sliver of a light emerges with the key to a house in Bath. Louisa with her best friend Nancy head for a new life in their new home in Bath but all is not what it seems and the fear of financial security is closing in on her. Louisa feels the only way to secure her and Nancy’s financial future is to return to the past she and Nancy left behind. A past were they relied on their looks and charm to support them. Louisa vows to make this return to a way of income different this time, she wants to supply a safe, clean environment for the girls who earned a living working on the street.

Jacob Jackson also has a past one filled with heartbreak and violence. His violent upbringing has led him to a career that revolves around the profiteering of violence. Jacob has been a boxer for a good few years now but when he happens upon Louisa Hill a proposal of a new career is brought to his attention. Jacob is worried he cannot leave his violent past behind him.

This is a story of two people with pasts that have seen so much hardship, heartbreak and violence. They have seen the ugly side to life and have frequented many dark places in cities. They have been brought together by fate with a view to making a difference to the lives of themselves and others. However, the darker side of life is never far away and Jacob struggles with the demons from his past. Both Louisa and Jacob fight with their emotions and the past and as they move two steps forward with the hope of better things to come they stumble one step back as the darkness of life sets in.

A great start to a new historical saga series set around three women with a past they wish to learn from and aspire to make new starts. Romance weaves gently around the heartbreak and struggles of life and fits in perfectly with the storyline. I’m looking forward to learning more about Louisa, Jacob, Nancy and Octavia.

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of Rachel Brimble’s latest historical novel: A Shop Girl at Sea.

A Shop Girl at Sea is Book 4 in the Pennington’s series and although each book is focused on a different character I would highly recommend reading the books in order to gain the full reading experience and enjoyment.  The Pennington’s series is fast becoming one of my favourite historical fiction series.  The books in order are:

  • A Shop Girl in Bath (Previously published as The Mistress of Pennington’s)
  • A Shop Girl Gets the Vote (Previously published as A Rebel at Pennington’s)
  • A Shop Girl’s Christmas (Previously published as Christmas at Pennington’s)
  • A Shop Girl at Sea

To catch up with my reviews of all books please follow the link here to all the posts on my blog: https://kraftireader.wordpress.com/?s=Pennington

This instalment focuses on Amelia Wakefield who has been working at the prestigious department store in Bath for a little while.  Amelia has been given a new assignment with one of her colleagues; a chance to visit New York to analyse the large department stores and it’s customers in the city of dreams.  Amelia and Mr Weir will be travelling to New York on the maiden voyage of the Titanic ship.

The world of industry, commerce, tourism and the public alike are a buzz with this new ship that can carry thousands of people across the seas in a luxury that many can only dream about.

Including such a pivotal moment in the history of the world in a fictional story in a way leaves the reader with a little spoiler.  We all know the fate of this maiden voyage by such an iconic ship and as I was reading the story I was waiting for the moment but I was so engrossed in the storyline surrounding the characters I was as surprised as the passengers on the ship.  I felt the intensity of the situation and I was anxious for all on the ship.

This is a story of excitement and trepidation visiting new lands of opportunity that soon take a turn of tragic events.  It’s also a story of two young people trying to escape their pasts to start afresh.  Away from the drama at sea there’s anther story taking place back home in Bath when another young lady working at the store is battling with a darkness of her own.  Ruby has been hiding her home life struggles for a long time but it’s reached a point of no return but she is so afraid of the conflicting emotions in her head and heart.

A Shop Girl at Sea is another wonderful instalment in this historical romance series; it’s a story of love overcoming stigmas, finding the strength to grasp new hope and opportunities.

Book Blurb

Gripping drama as Pennington’s department store prepares for a glittering Christmas in 1911, but a killer stalks the women of Bath.

Christmas sees Pennington’s at its most glorious, thronged with shoppers, its grand staircase and balcony adorned with holly, mistletoe, tinsel and lights. It should be the happiest time, but dramas are seething beneath the surface.

For Cornelia Culford, in charge of jewellery, a divorce hearing looms, where she could lose custody of her young sons to her overbearing and unfaithful husband.

For Stephen Gower, being head of security at Pennington’s is the perfect refuge from a tragic past at Scotland Yard. But soon the past will call him back, as Joseph Carter and Elizabeth Pennington beg him to help solve the murder of Joseph’s first wife, now that it seems as if the killer has struck again.

For Joseph and Elizabeth, their marriage depends on exorcising the past. But can it ever be laid to rest?

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of Book Three in The Pennington’s series: Christmas at Pennington’s.

The Pennington’s series is fast becoming one of my all time favourites; it has everything and more in a story. We have strong female lead characters, troubled pasts, struggles for independence, family drama, glitz and glamour of the early 1900’s, political uprising, danger, mystery and above all else romance.

Christmas at Pennington’s is Book 3 in the series and although each story can be read as a standalone the characters lives do follow on in their journeys in each story and it’s wonderful to read this progression so I would highly recommend reading all the books in the series in order.

Two people who have recently suffered a loss are left guilty with the repercussions from this. When fate plays it’s hand at putting these two people together can the strength from one give confidence to the other?

Cornelia Culford has left the family home with her two young boys and is seeking solace with her brother Lawrence and his wife Esther following the break-up of her marriage. Cornelia is concerned about the divorce court hearing and is afraid the judge will rule in her ex-husband’s favour. Cornelia has enjoyed the growing confidence and independence of earning her own keep whilst she’s been living in Bath but her mind is unsettled as to whether she can continue this as well as be the sole carer for her children.

Stephen Gower is a sergeant at Scotland Yard and is temporary taking time out from a very challenging, emotionally charged case. He’s decided to take a job at Pennington’s in Bath. With Stephen’s job he’s found it best to keep himself to himself but when Cornelia decides to befriend him he’s taken out of his comfort zone. Also thinking he will have an easy time working and living in Bath he’s faced with helping his new employer Joseph Carter in finding the culprit for his late wife’s murder. Memories from his life in London are forced back to the top of his mind and he has no option but to face them.

The author Rachel Brimble has created another great instalment in the Pennington’s series you will be kept on edge in a race to end years of mental torment for a murder cold case. We are also introduced to new characters which blend beautifully with the ensemble of ladies and gentleman of Bath we’ve learned to love from the previous stories. A story that is intense and dramatic at times but also hasn’t missed out any of the romantic charm.

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting the launch of Rachel Brimble’s latest novel:  A Rebel at Pennington’s.

This was so wonderful to return to the prestigious department store of Pennington’s in Bath.  I would strongly recommend reading book 1 in the series, The Mistress of Pennington’s, as you can then get a feel for the era, the characters and the setting enabling you to fully enjoy A Rebel at Pennington’s.

Both our leading lady Esther and leading man Lawrence have emotional scars from their past and to open up these wounds and let someone else in would be a show of strength and trust and acceptance.

It’s 1911 and a political unrest is all around the country with the upcoming Women’s Vote, Esther is involved in the Cause in a small suffragists group.  Esther is clearly talented with her creative flair with the window dressings at the department store and she has a strong belief in the Cause but when she meets Lawrence Culford her heart starts to beat a tune she hasn’t felt in a very long time.

Lawrence Culford is a single parent to two young children and is the proprietor of a reputable hotel in the city of Bath.  Lawrence has been the recipient of many emotional scars in the past and has fought to take control of his life.  When his past starts to pull him back he is afraid for his own emotional wellbeing and that also of his children.  Meeting Esther has given Lawrence an insight into a future full of hope but he is afraid of his scars being ripped open revealing a side of him that he is not proud of.

Can Esther and Lawrence learn to trust in love and in their beliefs to bring forth a future full of love and hope?

I really enjoyed this second instalment in the Pennington’s Department store series, it was interesting to learn more about Esther and of the suffragists and their involvement in the Cause.  This story was full of light and dark moments and the author interwoven a political event in history around the lives of people forging new lives.

Elizabeth Pennington should be the rightful heir of Bath’s premier department store through her enterprising schemes and dogged hard work. Her father, Edward Pennington believes his daughter lacks the business acumen to run his empire and is resolute a man will succeed him.
Determined to break from her father’s iron-clad hold and prove she is worthy of inheriting the store, Elizabeth forms an unlikely alliance with ambitious and charismatic master glove-maker Joseph Carter. United they forge forward to bring Pennington’s into a new decade, embracing woman’s equality and progression whilst trying not to mix business and pleasure.
Can this dream team thwart Edward Pennington’s plans for the store? Or will Edward prove himself an unshakeable force who will ultimately ruin both Elizabeth and Joseph?

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book. All opinions are my own and no content may be copied. However, authors and publishers may use elements of my reviews for quotes.

I am so pleased to be involved in the blogtour celebrating and promoting Rachel Brimble’s new series set in an Edwardian premier department store in the city of Bath. The Mistress of Pennington’s is book one in the series and after reading this story I am delighted that I have more instalments to come so I can continue reading about the characters I’ve learned to love.

City of Bath 1910 the department store Pennington’s was on the verge of change.  A change that would mirror the feelings of many men and women around the country.  A change for the better with equality amongst men and women starting to take the next step forward, a gap between the classes would be shortened with high end goods and services being made more affordable and a change in working conditions boosting morale and production.

The Mistress of Pennington’s is Rachel Brimble’s first instalment in the new Edwardian mini series and her words of fiction took me to the splendour of the glamorous department stores of the early 1900’s with it’s esteemed clientele and bespoke services.  I could picture the scenes of the doorman welcoming the ladies of the city draped in their finery wishing to spend a morning strolling through a beautiful store choosing their next purchase and then enjoying a cup of tea in the store’s restaurant.  Elizabeth Pennington was in her mid twenties and the daughter of Edward Pennington the owner of the store.  Elizabeth was keen to make her mark working at the store, she had so much energy and ideas she wanted to invest in the business.  However, her father was a difficult man, he was a bully and very controlling towards his daughter. Elizabeth has been afraid all her life of her father but she has a determined spirit within her to stand up against her father and not fall for his ways just like her dear mother had.

When local glove designer Joseph Carter approached Elizabeth with a view to Pennington’s selling his designs little would Elizabeth and Joseph himself realise that this meeting would be the start of something too strong to break.  Something that would ultimately open up wounds from the past that could harm the union of two talented individuals.  The future of Pennington’s truly depended on this union but would the old fashioned ideas of Edward Pennington thwart any future plans?

Joseph Carter was passionate about his work and also continuing the legacy of the charity work his late wife Lillian was involved in.  His heart is still broken since her death and he feels the guilt of not being able to save her from her untimely death.  This guilt and heartbreak has given him the need to succeed.  Meeting Elizabeth Pennington has ignited more than a fire of a desire to succeed, it’s ignited a flame in his heart that he felt would never heat up again.

Elizabeth and Joseph were from two very different backgrounds and any form of relationship either professional or personal would be thwarted.  But as secrets from the past are revealed it opens up old wounds revealing more heartache and obstacles for the journey ahead.

The Mistress of Pennington’s is a brilliant start to a new historical romance mini series.  It had a sense of atmosphere from the period, I could feel the political uprising with the hope of new beginnings and new opportunities but there was also fear in some for change.  The story was filled with optimism, hope, inspiration and a desire to change filled with a blossoming romance that sizzled.

I’m looking forward to book two which is due out later this year.
