It soon transpires that she is in Heaven, or on HVN. Because HVN is a lost, dysfunctional spaceship, and God the aging hippy captain. She seems to be there by accident. This is the story of Lorna Love who is about to embark on her career in law when her life is sadly cut short following an accident. Lorna wakes up not in hospital but on a spaceship known as HVN and God has chosen her for a higher purpose but Lorna has to go through a process before God will reveal all that is meant for her.
I had heard great things about this novel and was intrigued enough to want to read it. The author Charlie Laidlaw has cleverly written a story with such a great imaginative concept around a young woman who has been struggling with what life has dealt her. Lorna sadly at a young age has had to deal with grief, loss, family saga and with it the angst of teenage hormones and the trials of growing up. The story is very compelling, you are drawn to Lorna’s character, she is a young woman with strong beliefs but is also shy in herself. As Lorna starts remembering events and feelings from her past you learn to love her character even more. With the introduction of God and his entourage is so clever of the author but it is also quite charming, I was enchanted and intrigued by HVN and Irene with her unorthodox ways. Charlie Laidlaw has injected a little humour in this side of the storyline which was perfectly placed. I did get a little confused with the spaceship terminology but that is just me however, I hasten to add it didn’t distract me from enjoying the novel. The storyline as a whole kept me captivated and I wasn’t sure where the author was going to take the reader next.
The Things We Learn When We’re Dead is a very unique story; a story that deals with many emotions we face in life but it’s also quite a beautiful story; a story of love, loss and friendship. At the end I felt quite uplifted and was so pleased to have the opportunity to read such an imaginative novel.
