It has been a long and lonely year for neighbours Vivienne, Mary and Gwen. All ladies of a ‘certain age’, their lockdown experience has left them feeling isolated and alone. They are in desperate need of a change.

Things start to look up however, when Gwen comes up with a plan to get them out of London by borrowing a motor home. In no time at all the ladies are on the road – away from the city, away from their own four walls, and away from their worries.

The British countryside has never looked more beautiful. As they travel from Stonehenge to Dartmoor, from the Devon and Cornish coasts to the Yorkshire moors, gradually the years fall back, and the three friends start to imagine new futures with no limitations.

And as their journey continues and their friendships deepen, and while the seaside views turn into glorious mountains and moors, Mary, Vivienne and Gwen learn to smile again, to laugh again, and maybe even to love again. Now they can believe that the best is still to come…

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book. All opinions are my own and no content may be copied. However, authors and publishers may use elements of my reviews for quotes.

This was such a fun read and it is so refreshing to read a book about characters who are at the more mature age in life.

The Golden Girls feels very relatable especially with the pandemic restrictions of last year so the author Judy Leigh has incorporated this very real life event into a romcom. However, there’s no anxiety about the pandemic felt in the book as it looks at the social aspect of lockdown.

The Golden Girls aka Vivienne, who is in her 70’s and is an actress, Gwen who is also in her 70’s and is a retired opera singer and Mary who is in her 80’s and a retired nurse. The ladies are very different in personality but they do have a few things in common, they are neighbours all living under the same roof and they are experiencing life during lockdown.

The girls are getting frustrated and bored with restrictions and as neighbours they are already friends but when an opportunity crops up for them to escape and travel the country in a motorhome it is the perfect time to cement lifelong friendships.

As the girls pack their bags and head away from the confines of the city of London a new found freedom is felt between all three.

We follow the girls on a journey across the English and Welsh coastlines and countryside taking in all that they offer and more. But this is more than a road trip, it is a journey of enlightenment for all three as they learn more about each other, let themselves live in the moment and embark on memory lane tours.

I adored Mary she was such a fun character but her vulnerability was so tragically sad my heart went out to her. Gwen was probably the most responsible and I loved witnessing her emerge as a confident, beautiful flower. Vivienne oozed glamour and was full of confidence. They all brought a certain something to the group and blended beautifully. I laughed along with them and when it came to returning I too felt a sense of melancholy.

A fantastic, fun, read full of surprises.
